Australian cricket star Usman Khawaja has accused Peter Dutton of “fuelling Islamophobia”, after the opposition leader said he was concerned about a future minority Labor government relying on crossbench support including “Muslim candidates from western Sydney”.

In the wake of Fatima Payman’s defection from the Labor Party and her discussions with grassroots campaign groups seeking to activate Muslim voters in Sydney and Melbourne, political leaders have raised concerns about social cohesion at the ballot box. Anthony Albanese also said he did not back “faith-based political parties”, claiming such movements would “isolate” themselves from wider society.
