Penny Mordaunt and Grant Shapps have become the highest-profile Conservatives to lose their seats in a catastrophic night for the party, which is on course to record its worst ever election result.

Shapps, the defence secretary, was one of four cabinet ministers to have been confirmed to have lost their seats by the early hours of Friday morning, alongside Alex Chalk, the justice secretary, and Gillian Keegan, the education secretary.
