Anthony Albanese has appeared to confirm the government is considering a levy on social media companies in response to tech company Meta deciding not to renew funding deals with traditional media.

Albanese said on Thursday that social media companies have a “social obligation” and should not be allowed to “essentially ride free” on the work of traditional media companies that pay journalists.
