Ministers will take a “nick them quick” approach to rioters with plans for courts to sit for 24 hours to deal with suspects, but said there was no need to bring in the army.

After violent disorder in a number of UK towns and cities, Diana Johnson, the policing minister, said it was “absolutely” the plan to make swift arrests, charges and sentencing.
